This year I’ve been spending a lot of time focusing on the buffalo bur cropping up around the yard. So much so that I’ve missed something else spiny that’s been trying to take over the yard – canada thistle. I’d run into this pointy fiend several times in the past, but only the errant plant quickly dispatched with a bit of salt on its leaves.

Unfortunately for us, we’d had some of the yard torn up late last year, and when they did so, they dragged bits of a couple of plants around. Come to find out that when that happens, canada thistle is an expert at self-propagation. This has left us with a fair bit of a mess to clean up, with dozens of thistles popping up in random places around the yard.

Life can be like that sometimes too – we get so focused on one thing that we lose sight of others. And just as we start to feel like we’re overcoming that area that we’re so focused on, we start to realize that we’ve made a bit of a mistake and something else is starting to get out of control.

We need to learn how to focus on what’s important, without losing sight of everything else.
